September 27th Meeting
For many years, Dr. Judy Ann Mumford has been actively engaged, both personally and professionally, with families. Deeply convinced that children are treasures from God, and parenting is an awesome privilege as well as a great responsibility, her commitment is to reach out to parents with a message of validation, encouragement, and support.
Her book for parents of young children is entitled Small Boat, Wide Sea: Parenting in the 21st Century. The title was inspired by an Irish Fisherman’s prayer, “Dear God, be good to me. The sea is so wide and my boat is so small.” Motivation to write the book came not only from her own and others’ parenting experiences, but from her qualitative research with troubled teens whose lives were irreversibly altered by poor choices. In her book she attempts to translate what she has learned into effective parenting principles and practices.
Judy Ann has a degree in Christian Education from Moody Bible Institute, a Bachelors in Child Study from Stephens College, and Masters and Doctorate degrees in Family Studies from the University of Missouri in Columbia.
She is retired from the faculty of the University of Missouri and now devotes her time to Charting the Course ministries. She and her husband Spence, who have been married for 44 years, have two sons and four grandchildren.
Dr. Mumford will also copies of her book available for purchase following her presentation. Books are $10 each or 3 for $25.

MOPPETS
MOPPETS Childcare Policies:
- Your Child’s Belongings: Label everything. Label, Label, Label. We want to make sure that the personal items that your child uses are theirs! Please make sure all sippy cups, bottles, snack containers, loveys, pacifiers, diaper bags, backpacks, etc. are labeled with first and last name. We will provide name tags for your child. You will also need to supply diapers/pull ups for your child, if applicable. If you don’t already pack a change of clothes in your diaper bag or preschooler’s backpack, please also include those for emergencies. We have a very small selection of emergency clothes available.
- Arrival and Pickup Times: All children may be dropped off at 9:15am. Workers will not be available to watch your children until that time. Please be respectful of the time. If special arrangements need to be made, please contact the MOPPETS Coordinator, Amy Uppercue as soon as possible. Children must be picked up immediately following the MOPS meeting. Please feel free to pick up your child and return to the MOPS meeting room to visit with the other moms.
- Drop off and Pick up Guidelines: Babies, Creepers and Toddlers are dropped off in the Church Nursery. Please sign them in at the front counter, making sure to write any special instructions or allergies down on the sign-in sheet and your child’s name tag. Please be sure to take a pager so that you can be reached immediately if needed. When picking up your child, please wait at the front counter for your child to be brought to you. For security reasons, we ask that you do not go behind the counter at drop off or pick up times. Your child’s safety and your piece of mind about your child’s safety is very important to us. Please be sure to return your pager when you pick up your child. Two year olds will need to be dropped off in FLC 5, 3 year olds - 5 year olds will be in FLC 6.
- Illness Policy: A child will not be allowed to attend MOPPETS if they have any of these symptoms:
• Excessive coughing, sneezing, runny nose (unless slight and clear)
• Fever within the last 24 hours
• Questionable rash or skin infection
• Vomiting for ANY reason within the last 24 hours
• Diarrhea within the last 24 hours
*A doctor’s note can clear a child if he/she has symptoms but is non-contagious, and will be kept on file by the MOPPETS Coordinator.
You will be notified immediately if your child develops any of these symptoms during the meeting.
- Snacks: We supply snacks and juice for toddlers and up. If your child has any allergies or restrictions, please write it on their name tag, as well as the allergy tags provided and inform the MOPPETS Coordinator. If you would prefer to send a snack with your child from home, please let us know when you drop off your child. In the event that a special snack is given, you will be notified in advance. Our snacks include Cheerios, Gerber Puffs, Goldfish, Pretzels and Animal Crackers. Snacks given are age appropriate to each group.
MOPPETS CURRICULUM
Our 2-5 year olds will be working through a new curriculum, "Lively Bible Lessons for MOPPETS" over the course of the year. The curriculum is intentionally compiled and designed to fit the mold for the preschool aged child. The entire curriculum is broken down into four parts:
- A lively look at myself - This section covers topics that help young children with fear, responsibility, envy and self-esteem.
- A lively look at my relationships - These topics include kindness, helping those who are hurting, sharing, friendship, feelings and caring for God's world.
- A lively look at my faith - These faith-building topics include heaven, prayer, God's love, forgiveness, and more about God and his Son, Jesus.
- A lively look at celebrations - This section offers Bible lessons and celebrations for birthdays, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
